Great Student Results

Part of the fun of teaching is seeing the great results achieved by my students. My recent Instant Art Quilt classes are great examples. One online student, Sara Kelly, finished her quilt, entered it in a show, and won a blue ribbon before the class even ended! Her award winning piece, Playing with Fire, can be seen at left. Several other IAQ students have shared their images with me and you can see them in the Instant Art Quilt Student Gallery. It's always fascinating to see the variety of quilts created with this one technique.

Of course, I also enjoy meeting the students in my classes. (I even feel like I get to know the online ones.) In a recent Double Reverse Applique class in North Carolina, the "class angel" brought me two apples. How fun! Especially since our class project was a stitched apple. (BTW, it turns out that fresh fruit does not travel well in checked airplane luggage.)

Color Article in The Quilting Quarterly

I was delighted to be invited to write two color article for The Quilting Quarterly, which is the membership magazine for the National Quilting Association. The second article, "Continuing with Color" came out in the summer issue. I'll add it to my website, soon. In the meantime, you may be interested in some of my other free articles. Full directly here.

Upcoming Events

I'm enjoying a summer break from teaching travels. After catching up on my "to do" list, I look forward to developing some new classes, and hitting the road again in October. Perhaps you'd be interested in the two new classes I'm considering:
"Picture Perfect" - This short class will be a variation on the Double Reverse Applique technique. The project will be a two color portrait, using your own photo.
"Glued , Not Stitched" -
Lots of people have been asking me to teach this glued technique. I agree that it will make a fun class and am pondering the best type of imagery to use.

See Teaching and Events schedule for more details, and other events.

I'm working on creating a blog. What fun! In the meantime, you may enjoy the Dirty Dozen Fiber Artists blog. As a member of this group, I've posted several things there.

Next online class: Design Your Own Nature Quilt, starting August 7th! Image - Pink and white cosmos

This is my favorite class to teach, largely because of the thrill the students get from mastering some basic design principles. Using their own unique inspiration photos, students learn how to interpret them in fabric. No artistic skill is required, but this class does require some artistic courage! Details here.

My class sample, Cosmo Cotillion, can be seen at right.

Online Class Options

Want to take an online class, but the scheduling doesn't work? There are two options which may help you:
1. Two of my classes are available as "Personal Workshop" ebooks. These immediate downloads have all the same content as the classes. E-book Directory
2. You can sign up to receive advance notification of your favorite classes, which may help you plan ahead. To add your name to one or more distribution lists, use the newsletter subscribe box at the bottom of this page.

New Work

Last month, I showed you the four-piece composition I created to hang above my large screen TV. Well, after viewing it for a while, I decided that it didn't show up well enough against the dark wall. It needed to be lighter. So, I decided to completely rework it. I not only wanted something lighter, but I wanted the four pieces to relate to one other better.Image - 4 pieces, blue sky, gold foregroun

The result is this piece, Horizon Line. The sky portion is made from small pieces of fabric glued into place. The foreground gold color was done with Caran D'Ache wax pastels. I'm REALLY happy with the results! You'll find a detail shot here.

Enjoy the adventure!
