I've really had lots of fun working on my latest quilt,
High Ti. It was inspired by a photo I took of Japanese Ti plants. (Ti is pronounced like tea.) These tropical plants glow bright pink when lit from behind, but on this particular day, some of the leaves actually glowed orange! This was due to a winter freeze, which had turned some of the leaves tan. Amazingly, when backlit, they completely changed colors. Wow!
I couldn't resist such an image, but I wanted to interpret it very loosely. So, I printed my favorite photo. I studied it a little and then put it away. Working quickly, (and using many of my friend's bright fabrics,) I created a quick composition. What fun!
My original photo is shown below. Aren't those colors wonderful?

This is the second quilt I've made about ti plants. The first, Ti Plants A-Glow-Glow is much more representational. You can read about it's design and outcome here.
I think it's very important that borders integrate properly into the entire quilt. That was a bit of a challenge with this quilt. You can read about how I solved it on my blog. You may also be interested in an article I've written about borders. See it here.
When teaching my Design Your Own Nature Quilt class, I often preach "Be inspired by your photo, not owned by it." It was fun to do that in this case, and I'm happy with the bright cheery results. |
